The Green Star Lighting Compliance

Green Star Standard

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) is the nation’s leading authority on sustainable buildings and communities. They issue the highly respected Green Star rating system to assess and encourage the environmentally conscious design, construction, and operation of buildings. Greenlux lighting products seamlessly achieve Green Star standards because they are meticulously engineered to balance supreme lighting comfort with exceptional energy efficiency. By specifying Greenlux, projects can effortlessly secure vital Green Star points, ensuring the wellbeing of occupants whilst drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Increasingly, Green Star is being adopted by a wider range of businesses and property developers across Australia. We have put together a summary of the key lighting components required to achieve compliance, focusing on Indoor Environment Quality (Lighting Comfort) and Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Energy).

Lighting Comfort Criteria

For regularly occupied areas in buildings targeting Green Star, the GBCA sets strict visual comfort guidelines. To meet these compliance standards under the ‘Lighting Comfort’ and ‘Glare from Light Sources’ criteria, your lighting scheme must feature:

  • Colour Quality: A minimum Colour Rendering Index (CRI) of 85.
  • Colour Consistency: Demonstrated through a Standard Deviation Colour Matching (SDCM) of 3 or lower.
  • Glare Reduction: All luminaires must be designed to mitigate unwanted glare. A Unified Glare Rating (UGR) of less than 19 is required for key spaces such as living areas, dining rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms. For all other areas, a UGR of less than 22 is acceptable. Greenlux achieves these stringent metrics through the smart specification of diffusers, softening lenses, and honeycomb louvres.
  • Flicker-Free Performance: All luminaire control gear must meet the IEEE 1789-2015 requirements, qualifying as either “Low Risk” or having “No Observable Effect.”
  • Surface Illumination: Providing lighting level calculations that show a minimum standard of uniformity in lighting throughout the space.

Energy & Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Green Star heavily rewards the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This often requires achieving significant reductions to the baseline National Construction Code (NCC) Section J6 illumination power density.

This approach is harder than it sounds—it requires reducing the illumination power density percentage by specifying highly efficient fittings that achieve the correct light levels using fewer luminaires and less power consumption. Greenlux’s cutting-edge LED technology provides exactly this, delivering maximum efficacy without compromising visual comfort.

Furthermore, compliance points are bolstered through smart environmental controls. Greenlux supports this via:

  • Localised Lighting Control: Allowing staff to adjust light levels in their immediate task environments.
  • Automated Systems: Integrating flicker-free fittings with sensors for back-of-house areas and storerooms, and incorporating timers for exterior and display lighting.

Bring Your Space to Life with Greenlux

Understanding the science of colour rendering is vital, but translating that science into a physical space requires the right products. By choosing Greenlux, you are investing in industry-leading LED technology that maximises colour accuracy, visual comfort, and aesthetic impact.

Achieve Green Star Compliance with Ease When you specify Greenlux, you are also setting your project up for sustainability success. Because we prioritise high-quality colour science, our luminaires are engineered to effortlessly meet strict Green Star standards. With superior Colour Rendering Indices (CRI > 85), exceptional colour consistency (SDCM < 3), and advanced glare reduction, our products tick all the boxes for the Green Building Council of Australia’s rigorous Lighting Comfort criteria—helping you secure crucial certification points without sacrificing design.
