Workplace Lighting Standards

Guides, regulations, and lighting standards relating to commercial office fit-outs in Australia.

Australian Workplace Lighting Regulations & Standards

Every specification professional involved with selecting lighting for commercial buildings will come across office lighting regulations, National Construction Code (NCC) guidelines, and Australian lighting standards at some stage in their career.

In these pages, we will focus on guides, regulations, and lighting standards relating to commercial office fit-outs in Australia—and most importantly, the lux levels and visual comfort required for modern workspaces. At Greenlux, we make it simple to navigate these requirements with our cutting-edge, energy-efficient lighting solutions.

Regulations

The Fluorescent Lighting Phase-Out (Minamata Convention)

Following global trends to phase out halogen and mercury-based lamps, Australia is supporting the global effort under the Minamata Convention on Mercury to phase out fluorescent lighting. Making the switch to energy-efficient LED technology is now a critical step for building compliance and sustainability. Greenlux provides a comprehensive range of retrofit and complete luminaire solutions to make the change from fluorescent to LED seamless, cost-effective, and highly efficient.

AS/NZS 2293 – Emergency Escape Lighting and Exit Signs

It is a strict legal requirement in Australia to prove that your building complies with AS/NZS 2293. This standard provides guidance on the design, installation, and operation of emergency lighting and exit signs for commercial buildings. Greenlux offers a dedicated range of fully compliant emergency lighting products, ensuring your escape routes are safely illuminated and your building passes all mandatory testing with flying colours.

National Construction Code (NCC) – Section J6 (Artificial Lighting and Power)

The NCC sets strict performance targets for energy efficiency in commercial buildings, heavily regulating the maximum illumination power density (Watts per square metre). The current NCC requires significant reductions in energy consumption compared to previous iterations. Greenlux LED luminaires are engineered to deliver industry-leading lumens per watt, easily allowing your projects to overachieve on Section J6 targets while reducing operational carbon emissions.

Lighting Standards and Guides

AS/NZS 1680 – Interior and Workplace Lighting

This is the most important guide for lighting in the Australian workplace. AS/NZS 1680 defines the strict criteria for illuminance (lux levels), uniformity, glare control, and colour rendering across different workplace tasks. Whether it’s 320-400 lux for general screen-based office tasks or tailored lighting for specialized work, it remains the primary standard for indoor visual comfort.

Greenlux commercial lighting products are meticulously designed around the AS/NZS 1680 framework, ensuring your workspaces are not just compliant, but genuinely comfortable and productive for employees.

Property Council of Australia (PCA) Guide to Office Quality

When designing for Premium or A-Grade office spaces in Australia, specifiers look to the PCA guidelines. These guidelines push beyond basic compliance, asking for exceptional lighting quality and single-occupancy density criteria. Greenlux high-performance optics and architectural luminaires are built to meet the rigorous demands of PCA-grade commercial real estate, blending aesthetic appeal with supreme photometric performance.

Accreditations

Green Star Buildings (GBCA)

Green Star is Australia’s leading sustainability rating tool for the built environment. Under the Green Star Buildings “Healthy” category (Credit 12: Light Quality), projects must meet strict Lighting Comfort criteria.

According to the GBCA (FAQ F-00331), to meet compliance in regularly occupied spaces, your lighting must feature:

  • Minimum Colour Rendering Index (CRI) of 85
  • Colour consistency demonstrated through an SDCM of 3 or lower
  • Glare control with a Unified Glare Rating (UGR) of less than 19 for key areas (and <22 for other acceptable areas).
  • Flicker-free control gear meeting IEEE 1789-2015 requirements as “Low Risk” or “No Observable Effect”.

Greenlux products are purpose-built to confidently secure your Green Star points. Our commercial LED ranges boast UGR <19, superior CRI >90 options, exceptional colour consistency (SDCM <3), and high-quality flicker-free drivers, taking the headache out of Green Star certification.

WELL Standard V.2

The internationally recognised WELL standard focuses purely on human health and wellbeing. The Light concept consists of vital features like Lighting Exposure and Visual Lighting Design. Greenlux offers tunable white and circadian-friendly lighting solutions that align perfectly with WELL’s push for human-centric lighting, keeping your workforce alert and healthy.
